Brief Description of Kamakhya Temple

Located at the top of the Nilachal Hills in Western Part of the Guwahati City, the Kamakhya Temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya who is also known as a form of Goddess Sati. Goddess Sati was the wife of Lord Shiva.

The temple complex consists of many other smaller and bigger temples but the main attraction is the 10 individual temples of the 10 different forms of Goddess Sati that are scattered across the Nilachal Hills. These temples are of Tripurasundari, Kali, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, Tara, Kamala, Chinnamasta, Bhairavi, Dhumavati, and Bhuvaneshwari. Only temples of Goddess Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala are located inside the main temple complex. Rest of the temples are scattered all over the Nilachal Hills.

History of the Temple

The temple has a rich history which is related with the history of Assam and the Kingdoms which ruled Assam. The temple was built by Kamdev who according to the ancient text, is the son of Lord Brahma and God of Love. Kamdev was the ruler of Kamrup region which is present day Guwahati city. Kamdev built the temple with the help of the heavenly architect Lord Vishwakarma to get rid of a curse given by Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva once cursed Kamdev and burnt his human body. After Kamdev requested and asked his human body back, Lord Shiva advised him to built a temple where Goddess Sati’s womb fell and in that way he will get back to his human form. Kamdev followed Lord Shiva’s advise and built the Kamakhya Temple at the top of Nilachal Hills. But a natural disaster destroyed some portion of the temple which was built by Kamdev. Still the design of the very first temple built by Kamdev can be seen till today.

Temple of Black Magic

Kamakhya Temple is a Shakti Peeth

The spot where Kamakhya Temple was built is considered sacred because Lord Shiva and his wife used to meet here secretly. According to Kalika Puran, the temple is the spot where Goddess Sati met Lord Shiva for the first time. The Kamakhya Temple is also known as a Shakti Peeth. Shakti Peeth are known as the most sacred places according to Hinduism.

Shakti Peeth were created when Lord Vishnu destroyed Goddess Sati’s body into 51 Pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra to make Lord Shiva calm who was doing Tandav carrying Goddess Sati’s burnt corpse on his shoulders. Goddess Sati self immolated herself in the Yajna Fire just because her father King Daksha insulted her and her husband Lord Shiva. She couldn’t take the insult and jumped into the Yajna fire and gave her life. When Lord Shiva came to know about this, filled with rage and anger, he destroyed King Daksha’s palace and killed him. Later he started destroying the universe carrying Sati’s corpse. Fearing the wrath of Lord Shiva, other gods approached Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu then sent his Sudarshan Chakra and destroyed Sati’s corpse into 51 pieces and places where the 51 pieces fell became a Shakti Peeth.

The Kamakhya Temple is one of the major tourism booster of Assam. The temple attracts an average of 10 Lakh people per year. Devotees and foreign tourist often visit the temple to know about rich history of the temple and Assam.
